Can I get started for cheap?

Written by Dwight Aubert on .

Hunting Money JarWaterfowl hunting can get quite overwhelming and a bit pricey for a beginer. So how does a beginner get started?

Looking at everything you will need just to make that first hunt the price can get out of control. Here are the essential items you will need: Camo outfit, and hat, shot gun and ammo , duck call, decoys, a decoy sack, a boat or layout blind, life vests (if using boat), light, a Labrador retriever, federal duck stamp, hunting license, A guide, land lease or a lucky find on some public land. So now you are thinking "WOW! How am I ever going to obtain all this stuff and is it worth it? I do not have a lot of money to invest in this sport!"

Custom Layout Boats to Build Yourself for Under $250

Written by Heather Carver on .

Make Your Own Custom Layout Boat for Under $250

They have come out with some crazy things for duck hunting.  Some people are partial to hunting out of floating or permanent blinds... but something to consider is the not so new idea of a layout boat.  A layout boat can cost you as little as 3 or 400 for something used to as much as 3,000 for something new with all the special extras that aren't included in the regular prices.  The most expensive layout boat I've seen with all the accesories was 4,399 plus shipping.  That is INSANE.  Especially when you can build one custom to fit you for less then 250 bucks!

Money Saving Mud Motor

Written by Ryan on .

Mud motors have become desired by all duck hunters, but not everyone can afford one. Although they give hunters teh ability to get to areas unreachable by the traditional outboard, the price tag may sting the pocket book. I have desired one for years, but unable to afford one, or find one that is the right size for my boat. Most I would find were too small, or too big. This spring I finally decided to sell my outboard and get a mud motor, but stay within my budget, $1600.00. I found a kit online that was pre-cut, but  un-welded for $950, and included most everything to construct the frame.I decided to go this route because of the fact that I have access to a frame rack, which I can set up a jig to build the motor within 1mm tolerances.

The first step was to get the head of the jig set up and square, then mount the engine plate onto it. Once the engine plate was fastened to the jig it was measured, leveled, and squared to the frame rack. This is the main body of the frame so it is important to make sure that it is square. If the foundation isn't right, the rest of the project will be wrong.
